Professional Development for Alberta Music Teachers- Elementary, Band, Choral, and Handbell
The Alberta Teachers Association Fine Arts Council holds an annual Fine Arts convention every fall. This year it will be in Calgary on Oct. 27-29th. We have sessions for Art, Drama, Dance and Music. The link to sessions and registration is here. http://fac.teachers.ab.ca/Annual%20Conference/Pages/AnnualFallConference.aspx
This summer, I attended the Orff Institut 50th Anniversary Symposium, in Salzburg, Austria. The conference was in the form of lectures, workshops, pedagogical presentations, performances and a large exhibition featuring the history of 50 years of Orff Education. They were celebrating 50 years of leadership in Music Education, the Orff Way! The Orff Institute was founded in 1961 by Carl Orff and his colleagues with much confidence and great expectations. Its worldwide significance as a unique training centre for Elemental Music and Dance pedagogy in the tradition of Orff-Schulwerk is infamous. I had an absolute blast meeting teachers from all over the world that have embraced the philosophy and pedagogical ideas of Carl Orff and his colleagues.
Speaking of Orff, another suggestion that I can offer of course, is the Calgary Orff Chapter. They have a three workshop program that you can sign up for. To print off a registration form and a contact number, please follow the link. While all the sessions look great, I can personally vouch for Wendy Rae and Doug Goodkin. I received training from both of these wonderful presenters, and you will surely be inspired by them. http://www.calgaryorff.com/2010-2011_Registration_Form.pdf

Our School on Music Monday
http://www.cssd.ab.ca/stphilip/
On Monday, May 2nd, all 400 of us went outside, and music filled the skies as we sang in support of Music Education. Music Monday celebrates and honours Music Education across Canada. It is held on the first Monday of May every year. This year we sang the commissioned song "Tomorrow is Coming" by Luke Doucet. We had guitar help from two very talented guitarists, Shawn Kingston and Aaron Lowen.

Garage Band Show and Tell - Bonnie Lawrence (All)
Garage Band is a broad-based, cross-curricular tool. As a Universal Design for Learning program, it explodes the potential for writing, speaking or playing music for all learners. This tool mixes midi, sound files, and live performance to create audio. We will create a recording together, step-by-step, using the library of audio available in Garage Band. Learn practical tools you can take back to the classroom. Teachers of all grades and subjects welcome. Bring your Mac and let’s play!
Music
Up a Musical Notch-Multicultural 21st Century - Jennifer
Walden (All)
Today’s schools are filled with students from many cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Music is a powerful way to bring students together and to guide them toward open multicultural views. Music teachers face a challenging task: actively involving students in musical genres while instilling inspiration, enthusiasm, and the desire to learn more. This presentation, with an experienced clinician, is fully hands-on; participants will spend the session playing and moving to music from different parts of the world, experiencing ways to captivate interest, to learn along with students, and to instil inspiration through energy and enthusiasm. Set the example: we know we learn when we are having fun!
Taking the ‘Can’t’ Out of Cantor - Angie McGillivray (Div 1&2)
This hands-on singing session will guide Elementary Choir Directors through a handful of rehearsal techniques for the beginning choir. New and exciting warm-ups, canons, singing tips and repertoire ideas will be introduced. Teachers will leave with fresh ideas to design an inspirational choral program for their elementary choir as well as an opportunity to share their ideas and learn from other teachers in attendance.
Please contact me for registration information. There is a value earlybird registration fee of $275 instead of the $325 regular fee which will be charged after June 30th. Professional Development Funds can be accessed through your local ATA. The sooner you apply, the sooner you are approved to receive funds from ATA. You can get your free Fine Arts Council Membership by accessing your ATA Specialist Councils memberships.
